Travel insurance 'essential' for gap year adventure-seekers

The Times Student supplement has announced its list of the top ten places for student backpackers to head off the beaten track in Asia, with the hot springs of Beppu in Japan topping the list.

The town on the island of Kyushu is known for its hot springs as well as the 'hells' – boiling ponds created by volcanic activity.

But gap year travellers looking for a bit of adventure when they head overseas are reminded to make sure they get backpack travel insurance before they head away, to make sure they are covered should anything go wrong on the other side of the world.

Indonesia's Gili islands are named as the second alternative destination for Asia travellers, with the coral-fringed isles a true beauty spot and free from motorised land transport.

Finally, China's Yangshuo region offers perfect cave climbing opportunities and backpackers can also enjoy daredevil kayaking down the Li river.
