Africa top for 'volunteer' tourism

A survey has cited Africa as the top destination for travellers wanting to take up volunteer work abroad.

Research shows that it was more popular than east Asia, South America and Mexico when it comes to working for free overseas.

The UC San Diego survey also found that there has been a rise in the number of people ditching the beach towels and sunscreen and instead looking for more "meaningful" adventures.

"More and more people in all stages of life are thinking of becoming 'voluntourists'," said Bob Benson, director of the Center for Global Volunteer Service at UC San Diego.

"People are looking to spend their vacations and retirement in meaningful ways that make contributions to others."

Those who are planning to travel to Africa to take part in volunteer work are urged to ensure they have adequate travel insurance before they fly.

This is particularly critical if travellers are also planning on taking part in dangerous activities such as bungee jumping or white water rafting. ADNFCR-1320-ID-18546329-ADNFCR
