Let the train take the strain on a holiday in Canada
07 July 2010 07:52
Anyone planning a holiday in Canada should consider the benefits of travelling round the country by train.
An increasing number of people are now choosing their own itineraries for holidays rather than booking packages, with the availability of hotel booking services and worldwide travel insurance policies over the internet making it much simpler to go it alone.
That allows people to choose their own method of transport and according to Josephine Wasch of VIA Rail, in Canada that should mean the train.
Although flying across the vast country is much quicker, air passengers will not be able to see anywhere near as much of Canada's natural beauty as those who choose to travel by rail.
"When you take the train you get to relax and you get to see the scenery from out of your window," Ms Wasch explained.
She added that the long-distance trains have so many facilities on board they are "like a cruise on rails", making them ideal for travelling between major cities such as Vancouver and Toronto - a trip which enables passengers to see the Rockies, together with the forests and lakes of Ontario.
Canada is enjoying a surge in interest from potential holidaymakers after it was showcased to the world as the host of the Winter Olympics, with the Canadian Tourism Commission reporting a 100 per cent increase in the number of visitors to its website since the event.
