Suggestions from The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) are that 2012 will see a dramatic increase in the number of Britons seeking adventure and activity holidays.
In particular the baby-boomer generation, who have grown tired of the quintessential continental beach holiday, are expected to head abroad for new experiences in dramatically different cultures.
Holidaymakers searching for new and exciting experiences should always ensure they have suitable sports travel insurance before leaving the country.
The Travel Association's report said: "Holidaymakers are also expected to seek out destinations that have a strong and authentic sense of location, in everything from food and setting to excursions and entertainment."
