2. Széchenyi Thermal Bath

Budapest is known the world over for its spas. If you want to experience the true magic of these thermal baths, head to Széchenyi. The complex is surprisingly large, with 15 indoor baths and three sprawling outside pools. There's also a whole range of massage and spa treatments to try.

3. Margaret Island

The teardrop-shaped Margaret Island sits in the middle of the Danube and is a green oasis against the bustle of Budapest. Largely parkland, there are plenty of activities to keep you cool on a hot summer's day, from cycling beneath the trees to taking a dip in the island's Palatinus Baths.

4. Hungarian Parliament Building

Stretched out along the banks of the Danube, the striking parliament building - complete with iconic red dome - is one of Europe's greatest examples of neo-Gothic architecture. The parliament has a visitor centre, although check opening hours ahead of time as it's regularly closed.

5. Szimpla Kert

Since opening in 2002 in the heart of the city's Jewish Quarter, Szimpla Kert has proved something of a cultural revolution. Housed in a transformed old factory, Szimpla Kert is a one-stop shop for all things alternative, from farmers markets and open-air cinema to concerts and lively nightlife.
