A leading travel body has stressed the need for people to have a comprehensive travel insurance policy in place when heading abroad.

According to Abta, a fifth of British tourists are still travelling overseas without any insurance to protect themselves.

The organisation also warned tourists about a wrong notion where people believe that the British Government will take care of their expenses if something goes wrong during their trip away from home.

As for domestic tourists, only 44% take the time to invest in travel insurance, the poll involving 2,018 travellers has shown.

"It is very worrying that so many people are putting their health and finances at risk by travelling abroad without insurance," said Abta official John de Vial.
