Experience the wonder of the midnight sun

Experience the wonder of the midnight sun

Long evenings are one of the best things about summer, but what if the sun never set? Experience the magic of the midnight sun at one of these far-flung destinations...

Svalbard, Norway

If you've dreamt of visiting a deserted Arctic paradise where polar bears outnumber people, Svalbard might be the destination for you. This Norwegian archipelago flung out into the Arctic Ocean is one of Europe's last true wildernesses and the best place in the world to experience the midnight sun. The sun rises in mid-April and doesn't set until late August!

Ilulissat, Greenland

A clutch of rainbow-coloured houses at the mouth of a 40km ice fjord, it would be hard to call Ilulissat anything other than remote. And that's what makes it great. A perfect base for exploring the Arctic wilds of Greenland, visitors can whale watch, kayak, dog-sled and even take in some world-class cuisine. And, of course, when the summer comes so does the midnight sun.

Akureyri, Iceland

Iceland's buzzing second city Akureyri is perhaps the trendiest spot on this list, with a host of cafes, art galleries and night spots (or should that be day spots?) you can check out before settling down to enjoy the midnight sun. Akureyri is the perfect base for exploring the surrounding countryside, which includes the spectacular 60km fjord, Eyjafjörður.

Inari, Finland

A popular destination for those looking to enjoy the winter wonderland of Lapland, Inari is also a great spot in the summer months to catch the never-ending sunshine. Located on the shores of Lake Inarijärvi, explore the surrounding nature reserves, the excellent Sami culture museum, Siida, or simply marvel over views of the lake all day and night.

On a cruise ship

Cruising around the Norwegian fjords or the Icelandic coastline can be a great way to experience the wonder of the Arctic region while soaking up all that midnight sunshine. It's also a good option for those looking to cram in as much Arctic adventure as possible while maintaining the on-board comforts of a modern cruise ship.
