Passenger traffic at Heathrow Airport rose 31.5% year-on-year to over 5.8 million last month
Passenger traffic at Heathrow, the biggest airport in the UK, rose 31.5% year-on-year to over 5.8 million last month, its highest ever April figure, according to airport operator BAA.
The rise in passenger traffic could also have led to an increase in the number of people taking out travel insurance.
Edinburgh, another of BAA's airports, also had its busiest-ever April last month, when it handled over 776,000 passengers, up 43.9% year-on-year.
The overall passenger traffic at BAA's six UK airports rose 31% from April 2010 to 9.1 million last month, mainly driven by the Easter holiday season and the royal wedding bank holiday.
In April last year, the Icelandic volcanic ash cloud crisis affected passenger numbers.
Stansted handled 26.2% more passengers last month, while Southampton saw a rise of 18.5%.
Passenger traffic at Glasgow rose 27.1%, while the numbers were up 33.2% at Aberdeen.
