Britons could save themselves pounds by heading to certain long-haul locations
Family holidays to traditional hotspots like Menorca and Ibiza could end up costing more than far-flung destinations such as Orlando, Thailand and Bali, surprising new research suggests.
The Daily Telegraph has reported on new figures from TravelSupermarket, which indicate that these three destinations could be cheaper once things like flights, hotels, car hire and dining are considered.
It is believed that by opting for a trip to Phuket rather than Menorca, a family of four could in some cases save roughly £800. The figure might be even higher, at £1,240, if they head overseas to Florida over Ibiza.
Changing expectations
Emma Coulthurst, a travel expert at the website, said the reality of long-haul destinations may be quite different from people's expectations.
She is reported by the newspaper as saying: "Holiday package prices are lower this year in some locations and there are bargains to be grabbed, which provide the opportunity to experience long-haul for less."
Many people will currently be planning their summer breaks, and they'll need to consider everything from flight costs through to travel insurance.
The website's research shows that large year-on-year price decreases have been witnessed in Bali and Orlando. Compared to last year, prices are said to be down 16% in Bali and 11% in Orlando.
Couples could also benefit
However, it is not just families who may be in line to benefit from cheaper prices this summer.
Ms Coulthurst has indicated that long-haul bargains might also be available to those without children, even during the busy school summer holidays.
She concluded: "Normally, we'd say to avoid the school holiday dates if you haven't got children and are going short-haul. However, the cheapest time to go long haul to many destinations, including Thailand and Bali, is May to August."
