How to stay safe in the sun this summer

Be sun safe this summer

Be sun safe this summer

There's nothing better than feeling the warm summer sun on your skin, but too much exposure can be bad for your health. Avoid sunburn, eye damage and even an increased risk of skin cancer this summer by staying safe in the sun with these top tips.

1. Stay in the shade

Sounds obvious, but the best way to stay safe in the heat of the summer sun is to simply stay in the shade. Limit your exposure by seeking out shade wherever possible, whether you're at the beach, around the pool or even in your own back garden.

2. Avoid the midday sun

It's no coincidence that the Spanish traditionally take a siesta in the middle of the day, when the sun is at its strongest. Avoid prolonged exposure between 10am and 4pm, and if you're planning to do any outside activities then aim to schedule them in the early morning or late afternoon where possible.

3. Cover up

Although you might prefer to wear shorts, skirts and sleeveless tops, to stay sun-safe it's a good idea to wear clothing that'll cover up most of your body. If possible, try and wear long dresses, long trousers and long-sleeved shirts and tops for that added layer of protection.

4. Choose the right sunscreen

ith so many options, it can be difficult to know which sunscreen to choose but a general rule of thumb is the higher the SPF the better the protection. You should reapply sunscreen regularly through the day, particularly if you've got kids who are in and out of the pool or sea, as even water-resistant sunscreen washes off eventually.

5. Wear sunglasses

It's not just your skin that's at risk from the sun's harmful UV rays, your eyes are also susceptible, so don't forget your sunglasses on your holiday this summer. Make sure you invest in a decent pair, too, as many won't provide the right amount of protection against UVB and UVA rays.
