Many Britons beat the winter blues with a trip to Majorca, according to a study
Figures have underlined the popularity of Majorca for Britons looking to get away for a touch of winter sun.
Carhiremarket.com said more people rented a vehicle for breaks in Palma de Majorca than anywhere else during the 2010/11 winter season.
The figures for last December and this January suggest that many people beating the big freeze with some winter sun would have been taking out travel insurance for Majorca trips.
The comparison site said that 25% of people opting for a winter fly-drive looked to Spain for their trip.
The Spanish island was followed by Malaga and Alicante, according to the figures.
Many travellers headed to the US, with Orlando appearing among the top 10 destinations.
Anel Brun, product manager for carhiremarket.com, said: "As the Met Office warned late last year that December was almost certainly the coldest since records began, many Brits took to the skies and flew off to sunnier climes."
