More travellers may fly to Melbourne instead of Sydney after it was named Australia's best destination
A poll has found more people rate Melbourne as Australia's best destination, ahead of rival Sydney.
Melbourne topped the ticking list for sport events, shopping and laneway bars and cafes, said the survey of 1,000 people by Australian Traveller.
But the good news for the city does not detract from the importance of preparing for unexpected mishaps through
travel insurance no matter how delightful the destination.
The citizens of Melbourne would be happy with the poll results after being considered the country's second city after Sydney for so long, said Destination Melbourne chief executive Chris Buckingham.
Mr Buckingham said visitors liked Melbourne which is welcoming and both celebrates cool and accepts difference. Support from the millions of visitors annually was also important for Melbourne's citizens, he said.
