A Scottish skiing instructor has smashed the world record for the number of countries skied in one month.

Jamie Stevenson, 28, skied down mountainsides in 17 different countries in just 21 days, breaking the previous record by two countries and seven days.

Stevenson had planned to ski in 20 different countries, but had to cancel trips to Spain, Lithuania and Croatia due to a lack of snow.

"I'm confident that skiing 17 countries is the new world record. I'm delighted," he said.

"The original record was done within one calendar month and I managed to break it in just 21 days."

Stevenson began his solo trip, which took nine months to plan, by setting off from the Cairngorms mountain range in Scotland on 1 March, before heading to the continent in his VW Golf.

His route took him down to Andorra, before hitting the French, Italian and Swiss Alps for a hectic day's skiing.

He then travelled through Germany, Austria and Slovenia, before making his way up into Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

After continuing his route through Poland and up to Estonia, he moved into Scandinavia, ending his epic journey in Norway on 21 March.

"There were no big issues, because the whole thing was planned very well. I didn't stay for more than one hour in any resort."

"I went there to get my ski pass then got myself to the top of the mountain, as high as I could, and then skied to the bottom.

"I set myself an objective each day and I always achieved it. If I had given up just a single day, it would have had a knock-on effect on the entire project.

"There are other countries with great ski slopes out there and if I had an unlimited budget I could have easily done a few more."

Stevenson has managed to raise over £3,000 in sponsorship for Disability Snowsport Scotland while partaking in the challenge, with the money going towards helping the Scottish Paralympic ski team as well as teaching people with disabilities how to ski.

Anyone looking to emulate Stevenson's heroic trip should make sure that they have good travel insurance that covers ski holidays.
