More than 16.4 million holidaymakers took flights to Spain from the UK's regional airports last year

Spain has emerged as a popular holiday destination among British travellers, with many taking flights to the country from the UK's regional airports.

According to a study by RDC Aviation, over 16.4 million British holidaymakers made a trip to Spain in 2010, indicating a rise in the number of people taking out travel insurance.

Meanwhile Turkey holidays are also gaining popularity among tourists from Britain. The country recorded the biggest rise in passenger numbers from UK's regional airports last year.

Dalaman, a district on the south-western coast of Turkey, witnessed a 21.2% increase in the number people visiting the place from UK regions.

Flights to destinations in the US were the most popular options from London airports last year, nearly 13.9 million travellers heading off to different location in America.

London Heathrow emerged as the busiest airport in the country, handling nearly 65.9 million passengers during the year, followed by Gatwick with over 31.3 million travellers.
