A diamond worth £12,000 was found in the stomach of a thief in Spain after police caught him and made him undergo an X-ray at a medical centre.

The thief, along with another man, had stolen a British tourist's handbag with the diamond in it in the beach resort of Marbella.

As holidaymakers are at risk of becoming victims of theft during their trip abroad, it is important to make sure that they have a comprehensive travel insurance policy.

When cornered by police, who found the bag inside the car in which the man was travelling with three others with criminal records, he swallowed the gem.

Becoming suspicious after noticing the man putting his hand to his mouth, officers made him undergo an X-ray at a hospital and the diamond was located inside his stomach.
