Virgin Atlantic has announced that a new flight route between London Heathrow and the Canadian city of Vancouver will be opened in 2012.

The new service will carry tourists, who are expected to have taken out a comprehensive travel insurance policy, to Vancouver four times a week from May 24.

The airline, which is owned by Sir Richard Branson, is also launching a second flight service between Heathrow and San Francisco. The thrice-weekly service will begin carrying passengers from March 26.

The airline hopes that its latest move to make Vancouver and San Francisco more accessible to holidaymakers could lead to some 430 new jobs in aviation and tourism across the two cities.
