Seckau Abbey near Spielberg
Located in the foothills of the Austrian Alps, the Red Bull Ring is one of the motor racing world's most stunning tracks. And if you're planning on catching your racing heroes in action at the Austrian Grand Prix this summer, here's what else you won't want to miss out on in Spielberg...
What better way to explore the breathtaking scenery of the Austrian mountains than from the saddle of a mountain bike? There are plenty of excellent cycle routes in the area, but the most accessible one from Spielberg is the Mur River trail, which follows the route of the river as it passes through the city and the lush landscape of the surrounding Styrian valley.
If all that cycling sounds like too much work, why not opt for two feet instead and take in the Rachau tree-top hike? Located in the hills east of Spielberg the Wipfelwanderweg Rachau, as it's known locally, is Europe's highest treetop walk and will take you along a series of wooden walkways and lookout points where you'll be able to soak up the many majestic views.
After all that walking and/or cycling, take a well-earned rest by tucking in to some lovingly-crafted cakes and biscuits at the Café Konditorei Regner in the village of Seckau. Founded in 1660 as a farm bakery, these days Café Regner creates all sorts of cakes, chocolates and breads. There's plenty to choose from, but the speciality of the house is the Seckauer gingerbread.
Just down the road from Café Regner is the impressive Seckau Abbey, a Benedictine monastery consecrated back in 1164. These days, it attracts tourists from around the world to its picture-perfect mountainside setting. Two guided tours take place every day throughout the summer months, which is the perfect way to work off that gingerbread!
If you don't get your fill of cars at the Red Bull Ring, why not take the short drive to the Volkswagen Käfermuseum in the nearby village of Ingering II? There are plenty of VW Beetles to check out at the museum, along with a whole host of classic motors and even a couple of simulators if you fancy pretending you're behind the wheel.
Are you setting off for Austria this summer? Well, don't forget your travel insurance. At World First, we provide European travel insurance that'll give you complete peace of mind while you take in the sporting action.
