How to stay safe during winter sports

How to stay safe during winter sports

Heading out on the slopes this winter? Whether you're skiing, snowboarding, sledding or skating, a slip on the slopes could ruin your holiday. Follow our top five safety tips for help staying safe in the snow...

1. Wear protective gear

It's important to always wear the appropriate protective gear. Helmets, gloves, goggles, knee and elbow pads are all designed to protect you from common injuries. If you have a recurring injury such as a weak wrist or ankle, be sure to strap it up before you head into the cold.

2. Warm up

Take the time to limber up before you start your chosen activity. Stretching should be an important part of your morning routine, warming up the muscles and loosening the joints to reduce the risk of injury.

3. Learn how to fall

Slips and slides out on the slopes often cause no more than a few bruises, and an occasion for your friends to laugh about later. However, the slightest twist, collision or awkward landing could leave you with injuries that will ruin your holiday. Avoid dodgy landings by asking an instructor's advice on the safest way to catch yourself when you fall.

4. Don't get ahead of yourself

Know your limits and only take on the slopes and manoeuvres that match your skill level. Attempting to keep up with those who have more experience than you could lead to nasty accidents.

5. Stop when you're tired

Sometimes it's best to say no to that last run. Never attempt to take part in dangerous physical activities while tired. Not only are you more likely to over-exert your muscles, but fatigue can cause your concentration to dip, increasing the risk of accidents.
