Lonely Planet has revealed its top European destinations to visit in 2017, with Zagreb in Croatia taking the top spot.

According to the guidebook publisher, Gotland in Sweden, Galicia in Spain and n orthern Montenegro are the second, third and fourth best places to visit respectively this year.

And there's a surprise British inclusion in fifth spot, with the West Yorkshire city of Leeds being included.

Alentejo in Portugal, n orthern Germany, Moldova, Paphos in Cyprus and Le Havre in France round off the top 10 for this year.

Zagreb takes the top spot

According to Lonely Planet, Zagreb earned the number one spot because of its cosmopolitan and edgy atmosphere.

UK destination editor James Smart said: "From cultural adventure to spectacular scenery, Europe has something to offer every traveller.

"For Lonely Planet's Best in Europe 2017 we've compiled our hot list of destinations across the continent to visit this summer, all offering something new, exciting or undiscovered that make them worth exploring right now."

Boost for Leeds residents

The inclusion of Leeds was based on its thriving night life and growing reputation as a source of quality food and craft beer. Its urban regeneration over recent years also came in for praise, as did the northern city's cultural scene.

Mr Smart said Leeds is no longer simply defined by its industrial history.

Instead, he commented: " Leeds is now a confident, cultural hub in the north of England. With major events this year including the reopening of Leeds Art Gallery and the 50th anniversary of Leeds Carnival, there's never been a better time to head to Yorkshire and join the party."

Travel insurance reminder

All 10 of the destinations on the Lonely Planet list are capable of providing memorable holidays. But whether venturing to Croatia, France, Germany or elsewhere, tourists should always invest in quality travel insurance.

Doing so could be the difference between a relaxed holiday and a stressful trip defined by costly medical bills and flight delays.
