A record 3.5 million people are likely to head overseas for the Christmas and New Year period from the UK, according to new research.
The figures from the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta) have revealed that millions are now determined to leave the cold British weather behind and head to guaranteed sunshine destinations such as Egypt and Goa.
And BAA estimates that 2.7 million people are going to be heading through its airports over the festive period, with 1.2 million using London Heathrow alone.
Justin Fleming, ABTA's president said: "This is always a peak time for travel as people make the most of the bank holidays and once again there are a record number travelling."
Millions are also getting away for some snow-based fun, with early snow conditions in Europe described as "fantastic" by Abta.
With winter sports travel insurance and ski insurance vital for anyone planning Christmas on the slopes, travellers heading to locations such as France, Austria and Italy as well as the USA and Canada are urged to plan ahead for their Christmas trips.
