Large hotel brands are popular with holidaymakers because they are seen as more reliable places to stay.
That is the opinion of Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, which has suggested that bigger hotel brands can "offer peace of mind".
Chief operating officer Paul Flaum, of Whitbread Hotels and Restaurants, said that a preference for well known hotels was also as a result of the wide amount of choice now presented to potential guests.
Mr Flaum also noted that the lack of unification in the hotel industry which makes it more difficult for lesser known hotels to attract customers.
He said: "It is still a fragmented industry, despite having some big brands in it, and there will be a big challenge for the independents, despite taking care of their hotels in the last few years, with more choices people will walk towards the big brands for peace of mind."
Recent figures from STR Global revealed that revenue per available room fell dramatically from October through to the start of November 2008.
