Brits benefited from lower-priced holidays last year

New research has shown that while many people may have been opting for a 'staycation' last year in a bid to beat the dreaded recession, those who did go away were making the most of their money.

The latest Hotel Price Index from reveals that the average price of a hotel room worldwide declined by 14 per cent to £90 a night between 2008 and 2009, meaning that travellers who knew where to look probably ended up with better value than usual.

Savvy travellers were also looking further afield than the continent based on a wealth of advice pointing out that while the eurozone may have been costly, there were other locations that were not.

The Middle East and similar mid-haul destinations proved to be popular, as did Marrakech, perhaps because average prices there were down by 15 per cent.

A spokesperson for said: "What we've seen is that rather than forego their holidays, Brits have just got much better at making their money go further."

That was last year, but what can you do this year to reduce the cost of your holidays? has a few tips which could give you more bang for your buck.

Firstly, it suggests going self-catering in a villa instead of opting for a hotel, as it can be cheaper, plus you can share the cost (and the cooking!) with friends or family.

Then, despite the recession now being over the company said you would still be wise to opt for destinations outside the eurozone, such as Turkey.

However, it is also worth keeping an eye on foreign currencies, as Portugal, Ireland Greece and Spain are all experiencing weak domestic economies that could lead to savings for travellers, pointed out.
