Australia is still a hotspot for backpackers

It's one of the most culturally interesting places on the planet and it doesn't rain much, so perhaps it's no surprise that Australia continues to be the hottest backpacking destination in the world.

A recent survey by Tourism Research Australia showed that despite the economic downturn, international visitor numbers in Australia are up by two per cent on last year, mostly thanks to young people taking gap years.

If you're leaving sixth form or college this summer and have decided that you want to get out and see the world instead of heading straight into a job or university, then we'd highly recommend a gap year holiday in Australia.

The vast country has everything, from interesting animals to golden beaches and rainforests, meaning that you'll never be short of something to do.

You won't have to worry about learning a new language either, so if you intend to work to fund your trip, this should be relatively easy to do.

Embrace Australia states that if you are aged between 18 and 30, you can apply for a Working Holiday Visa which will last up to 365 days, meaning that you can pull pints of Oz's finest beers or work in one of the many hotels with ease.

Of course, it's not all about work - after all, you're going backpacking to have fun, right?

While you may be keen to check out well-known attractions like Uluru, Sydney Opera House and the Great Barrier Reef, don't forget to get off the beaten track and see some of Australia's other attractions.

For example, the Ningaloo Reef is a great alternative to the Great Barrier, as it's much less busy, plus you can wade right out to the coral. You can also swim with whale sharks there at the right time of year, which is a phenomenal experience.

If we've convinced you that Australia is the destination for you, then the final thing to mention is good backpackers travel insurance.
If you're on a gap year, you'll need a policy that will cover you for every eventuality. Luckily, this won't be hard to find at World First, as we have one tailored for this very purpose.
