Spain remains a hotspot but long-haul makes a comeback

With the holiday season now well underway, a flight search engine has revealed some of our hot destinations for 2010.

Similar to last year, three Spanish destinations took the top three places on Skyscanner's most sought-after list in the form of Alicante, Malaga and Palma.

Faro in Portugal and Turkey's Dalaman also scored highly, as did Tenerife and Ibiza, suggesting that Brits are still keen to take a classic beach holiday during their precious time off.

However, rather interestingly, more long-haul destinations also featured in Skyscanner's compilation than was the case last year.

New York came in eighth, while Orlando followed in ninth position as holidaymakers get more adventurous with their travel plans.

Meanwhile, flights to Bangkok also made an appearance in tenth, although it is not advised to fly there now due to intense political unrest, Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office counsel states.

Barry Smith, co-founder of Skyscanner, said the findings of the list seem to show that people are reverting back to their pre-recession travel ideas.

"Last summer there were no long-haul destinations in the top ten and Spain took seven of the top ten places. This summer, it looks like budgets are a little bigger," he commented.

Staying with Skyscanner for the moment, the organisation has also released a list of destination suggestions based on the Eurovision Song Contest, which is taking place soon.

Top of its chart is Spain, which attracts 16 million Brits a year, while Norway is also put forward despite its reputation as an expensive place to go

Greece, Ireland and Luxembourg, all regular rivals for the cheesy music tournament, are the final three holiday recommendations thanks to their interesting cultures and fascinating scenery.

Hopefully this has provided you with some good ideas for your own trips abroad this year, whether you want to go to Europe or worldwide.
