Vegas still top gambling spot

Las Vegas is the most popular destination for British gamblers because it is accessible and familiar, an industry publication has said.

According to Total Gambler magazine, people planning a foreign gambling trip tend to choose Vegas because it is somewhere they have heard of.

Editor Chris Marais noted that another attractive quality of Las Vegas is that it is not just a "gambling centre", which is often the case with other locations.

Instead, there is a host of other things to see and do in Sin City that help to make it very appealing.

Mr Marais also pointed out that the lack of a language barrier and the favourable exchange rate only serve to boost Vegas' popularity.

He commented: "[Las Vegas] has all the other attractions away from gambling; there are sports to watch there, it has shows, and it has excursions out to the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon."

Figures from the Las Vegas Visitors and Convention Authority revealed that 39.2 million people visited Las Vegas in 2007, up 0.7 per cent from 2006.
