Holidaymakers advised to think about travel insurance

The recent volcano-related international air travel chaos has emphasised the need for people to buy a good travel insurance policy before jetting off overseas.

Newspapers and television news bulletins were dominated by coverage of the shutdown of the skies, as thousands of British holidaymakers were left stranded for days.

Amid talk of the Dunkirk spirit and tales of epic journeys made by celebrities such as Gary Lineker and Jeremy Clarkson, the issue of holidaymakers obtaining proper protection and taking out good travel insurance policies was largely overlooked.

The Daily Telegraph's Nick Trend has now advised travellers who make their own plans rather than booking package holidays to think carefully about protection before setting off.

He explained that while paying by credit card offers holidaymakers some protection, a good travel insurance policy will provide a greater level of cover.

However, holidaymakers should check the terms of their travel insurance policies before setting off, as Mr Trend pointed out that insurers offer different levels of cover for things like scheduled airline failure and related accommodation costs.
