Home improvements can wait - it's holidays Brits want!

Although bank holidays may traditionally be a time to catch up on all those jobs around the home you've been putting off for months, it seems that fed-up Brits are downing tools and arming themselves with plane tickets and travel insurance instead.

New research from Mintel has shown that people in the UK are ditching DIY during their spare time in favour of spending more money on holidays and similar leisure activities.

Two million people have stopped doing their own odd jobs over the past couple of years, while 41 per cent are planning to take more holidays.

And it's not just teenagers who would rather see the world than put up shelves in their free time - apparently it is the 35 to 54-year-olds who are most likely to do this.

Mintel spokesman Neil Mason mused: "There has been a perceptible shift in consumer priorities away from the home and towards leisure."

Given the flurry of news reports concerning hammer and drill-related injuries that usually follow bank holidays and half-terms, perhaps this new phenomenon is no bad thing!

However, with ABTA reporting that two million people are set to leave Britain for sunnier climes over the Easter period, it's important to remember that little accidents can happen on holiday too (although we hope they won't!).

If you've decided on a last-minute trip this Easter, don't forget that you can organise your travel insurance and be covered in minutes at World First - just download your documents (or email them to yourself if you're a techie) and you're good to go. We've got family policies, single trip cover and group travel insurance, so there's sure to be something to suit your needs.

And finally, ABTA states that 575,000 people from Heathrow and 141,000 from Manchester will be jetting off to places like Spain, the Canary Islands and Sharm el Sheikh this weekend, so have a great time if you're one of them!
