A leading figure in the travel industry has sent out a warning to holidaymakers to make sure they are properly insured.
The chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), Derek Moore, has said that more airlines could go bankrupt in the coming months, and it is essential to ensure you have adequate travel insurance.
Due to this recent uncertainty, he said that there had been a surge in books with ATOL-protected travel operators.
Mr Moore said: "This is the time when money may be tight for some people and there is a lot of economic uncertainty. Make sure your holiday is protected and book with a recognisable tour operator."
Booking with an ATOL-protected carrier prevents holidaymakers from losing their money or being stranded abroad in the case of tour operator insolvency.
A recent investigation by American Express found that nearly a quarter of Brits were considering not taking out travel insurance for their next holiday, citing the credit crunch as the reason.
