Research has revealed the over-55s are one of the most likely groups to consider an overseas holiday with their family this year.

The study from Explore Research showed finding a quality hotel is the top priority for travellers aged 55 plus. But in addition to securing first-rate digs older travellers should also arrange seniors travel insurance.

Carried out on behalf of Travel Weekly, the survey also asked respondents from other age brackets about their plans for overseas travel in 2013, and it appears many are likely to go abroad with their family. The research shows overall that 82% of people were "very likely" or "quite likely" to go on a family holiday this year. Along with the over-55s, 18 to 34-year-olds were also the most likely to consider going away with their family.

Half of those polled thought cost was the most important factor when deciding on an overseas trip, while finding a destination the family could agree on was crucial for two fifths of those taking part.

Katie Bryan-Brown, managing director of Explore Research, said: "More than one-third of people will book with larger groups, either with friends or other families, or extended family."
