Skiing has begun at a ski resort in western Maine
Winters sports fans can start waxing their skis and renewing their
ski travel insurance policies after a US resort used its high-tech snowmaking equipment to get the season off to an early start. With temperatures dipping enough to make the operation possible, snow guns were used on a trail in the Newry area of western Maine's Sunday River ski resort.
A million-dollar investment has seen the resort equipped with 300 high-tech HKD SV10 Impulse snow guns. The snow-making equipment will be used to help cover more than a dozen of the most popular runs at Sunday River. They include Moonstruck; Ecstasy; Monday Mourning; Lazy River; T2 and Grand Rapids.
Sunday River's president and general manager Dana Bullen said they were committed to making snow whenever possible. "Making snow in October is the new norm. We've opened before Halloween for the last five seasons now so we're always ready to start making snow the moment temperatures are right."
