Survey finds women wear the trousers when it comes to holidays

We Brits work hard for our annual holidays, so it's perhaps no surprise that we want to get the destination and everything else about the trip right.

However, what may surprise you is that when it comes to travel, women are very much in charge.

A new survey carried out by has found that a quarter of wives and girlfriends take sole responsibility for organising their annual holiday, with men prepared to take a back seat.

Only 12 per cent of the male respondents said they take the helm for things like booking hotels, organising flights and purchasing travel insurance cover.

Indeed, 35 per cent of women said they wouldn't trust their partner to get it right, while ten per cent said they had ended up arguing with their significant other after letting him decide where to go and what to do.

However, 25 per cent of the ladies consulted for the survey admitted that while they insist on choosing their trips abroad, they are happy to let their man pick up the bill.

Alison Couper, spokesperson for, said: "For many couples, deciding where to go on holiday can be one of the most important and contentious decisions in their relationship."

She urged people going away this year to try and choose somewhere that meets the needs of everyone going on the break in order to avoid arguments.

This advice is echoed by Paula Hall, relationships expert for the BBC, who said that in order to avoid contrasting ideas of what amounts to a relaxing holiday, couples should discuss what they each want to get out of the break before they book.

"One partner may imagine a week of sunbathing, reading, long walks along the beach and candlelit suppers, while the other is looking forward to scuba diving, visiting the ancient sites and dancing the nights away," she pointed out.

Today's news follows a report in the Mirror earlier this month in which Best Western said a quarter of teenagers are now being allowed to choose the destination for their family's holiday.

Who knew travel was such a minefield these days!
