Holidaymakers trying to cut costs when preparing to go on holiday have been told not to scrimp on purchasing travel insurance by the travel company STA Travel.
A spokeswoman for the firm has said that although travel insurance can seem like "an unnecessary cost", it is "undoubtedly the wisest purchase you can make".
Gap year travellers or those planning to take part in sporting activities may get the biggest benefits out of taking out travel insurance because they may be the most likely to lose their belongings or pick up an injury.
Specialist travel insurance policies are available which focus directly on these sorts of activities.
Gap year travel insurance would be a wise investment for those expecting to be away any amount of time, while different sporting insurance policies such as winter sports travel insurance, ski insurance or travel insurance for sports and activities may be wise for budding sports enthusiasts.
STA Travel also advises tourists to make sure that their travel insurance covers them for all the countries they plan to visit and for all the activities they plan to participate in.
