Travel insurance is 'important'

Taking out travel insurance prior to embarking on an adventure has been described as "an important part of planning a trip abroad", by an article in the Guardian.
The piece states that travel insurance is a good investment because it protects a holidaymaker "against the cost of any unforeseen events".
Some of the benefits provided by a good travel insurance policy include making sure that any unexpected medical bills are paid, as in certain regions of the US it can cost £25,000 to perform routine surgery.
Also travel insurance can meet the cost of new belongings if any are lost or damaged, while compensating a holidaymaker if their flights are cancelled or if they are delayed and their flight takes off without them.
The article goes on to state that travel insurance has become cheaper to obtain with some policies available for as little as £5.
Frequent travellers are advised to cut costs by taking out annual travel insurance while sports fanatics may get the best deal through travel insurance for sports and activities.
New research from American Express Insurance Services found that almost three quarters of holidaymakers are planning on taking out annual travel insurance within the next year.
