Travel insurance 'is not a luxury'

Brits should not treat travel insurance cover as a luxury, it has been warned.

According to a spokesperson from the Association of British Insurers (ABI), people should see travel insurance as a "central, integral part of planning any trip overseas".

They noted that taking a trip abroad without travel insurance is a risk that does not need to be taken.

"You can only think of the consequences of not having some sort of financial protection, for example if you fall ill abroad which particularly in a country outside Europe where a European Health Insurance [Card] will not apply," he warned.

As well as this, the ABI spokesperson pointed out that cutting back on holiday insurance cover to save cash is a false economy.

Recent research from Lloyds TSB showed that one in ten people, around 5.2 million, have taken a break without travel insurance in the past.

More than half (54 per cent) admitted to just forgetting about the cover.
