Winter blues sees increase in holiday bookings

Tourism websites have experienced a bumper January as holidaymakers look to escape the British winter for sunnier climates, according to new research by comScore Media Metrix.
The data compares traffic to websites in the month from December 2007 to January 2008.
It is thought that the increased numbers reflect the deals coming onto the market in the post-holiday period and the fact that half-term school break falls in winter because of an early Easter.
Among the more impressive numbers, ground and cruise sites recorded 11.3 million web hits, up by 27 per cent and car rental sites had 5.1 million visitors - a 26 per cent increase.
Nearly 31 million people searched hotel or resort websites at a rise of 23 per cent over the month.
Britons have been reminded to ensure that travel insurance policies sufficiently cover any costs associated with a medical mishap, cancellations or lost luggage as part of planning their winter getaway.
