Travellers heading off on gap years should ensure they have taken out travel insurance and that they are "covered for every eventuality", it has been claimed.
Student travel firm STA says that it is vital that backpackers and others planning lengthy trips have the correct insurance for their holiday before they fly.
The company also recommends that travellers "plan as much of their trip as possible" in advance.
According to a report from i-to-i, last year saw 29 per cent of people plan to quit their jobs to take a gap year - a ten per cent rise on the previous year.
A spokesperson for STA travel said: "Travel insurance is an absolute must for any traveller to ensure they are covered for every eventuality wherever they are in the world."
Research carried out at the end of last year by American Express poll found that 59 per cent of travel agents reported a rise in enquires about travel insurance.
