Thirty years on, World First continues to be the UK’s industry leader in providing travel insurance for HIV positive travellers. Since World First became the first insurance provider to sell this cover in 1980, it has worked with leading HIV charities to ensure the cover provided is appropriate, in addition to raising thousands of pounds, particularly during the late 80s and early 90s, to raise HIV awareness and educate the general public about the disease.
Today, there are at least 80,000 people in the UK registered with HIV, with many living without symptoms. Despite this, travel insurance can still be an issue with many companies refusing to insure, or only offering prohibitively expensive cover. There are specific issues pertaining to insurance for positive travellers, including the fact that many travellers may also suffer from HIV associated conditions, such as hepatitis or haemophilia, which many travel insurance companies also exclude.
World First Travel Insurance have extensive experience selling cover to positive travellers, including same sex couples, which means that not only can they offer some of the most affordable policies (starting at just £45 for an annual policy), but they offer the right cover. At World First, there is no separate HIV travel insurance policy – the cover is sold as part of the companies long established range of cover for people with pre-existing medical conditions, which do not carry any exclusions relating to HIV.
In addition, World First provides an emergency assistance service for HIV positive travellers, which gives them access to a team who are trained in the condition and also all the problems HIV travellers may face.

At World First we have always recognised that HIV positive travellers, and their travel companions, need the same level of cover at the same great price as all our customers,” says Martin Rothwell, Managing Partner of World First. “We are proud of the fact that we have been selling cover for so long and really understand the complexities of this condition, and what issues might arise for positive travellers.”
