Perth in Australia has enjoyed a four-day heatwave

The Australian city of Perth is bathing in a heatwave, according to weather experts.

The four-day hot spell has seen temperatures soar to 35 degrees over the period and a peak temperature above 40 degrees was recorded on Monday, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

Even in Perth, which is a particularly warm coastal city on the east coast of the country, recent temperatures are unusually high.

The mercury has only hit such consistently high levels at this time of the year twice previously, in 1922 and 2003, and the average temperature for March is now the highest ever recorded.

But while locals may be accustomed to the sizzling temperatures, tourists in Perth have been advised that extremely hot conditions can be dangerous, particularly for those with a pre-existing medical condition. Therefore such travellers are advised to take out travel insurance with medical conditions.
