The UN has warned of a possible re-emergence of the deadly bird flu virus

The deadly bird flu virus could re-emerge, the United Nations has warned.

The agency has urged greater surveillance against a potential pandemic after a mutant variant of the virus appeared in Vietnam and China.

Fears have already been raised that the new strain could resist the existing drugs and therefore its risk to humans cannot be predicted.

Britons planning to head off to these countries are advised to take out comprehensive medical travel insurance cover to guard against any eventuality.

A six-year-old girl had died from bird flu in Cambodia last week, the UN said.

A total of 331 human deaths from 565 confirmed bird flu cases have been reported from across the globe since 2003.
