French Alps ski resorts opening

The French Alps officially kicked off its winter sports season this week, with many of the area's top ski resorts opening early following the latest snowfall.

According to the French Tourist Office, resorts in Les Menuires will be opening from December 6th - a full week before the planned December 13th opening, with special rates for early guests.

Chamonix, meanwhile, will see the daily opening of the Grands Montets ski area from December 6th, while the Brevent-Flegere and Balme areas will be open for business by December 20th.

Les Portes du Soleil has seen impressive snowfall of 50 cm at 1200 metres and 120 cm at the top of the slopes - enough for the resorts of Chatel, Avoriaz and Les Gets to partially open last weekend.

Ski and snowboard enthusiasts packing in a hurry to take advantage of some of these early offers need to ensure that they don't forget to sort out their winter sports travel insurance before they leave.

Last month, the first resorts in Spain, Austria, Switzerland, Norway and North America began opening after experiencing heavy November snowfall.
