Baggage handlers in Cyprus went on strike and caused delays for British tourists

Tourists flying with Thomson Airways between Cyprus and the UK have been hit by impromptu baggage handler strikes at Paphos Airport.

The unplanned action by 100 ground handlers working for Swissport at the airport was reported to be over a plan to cut seven jobs and slash the hours available for the rest.

As a result Thomson had to adjust its timetable on November 16 to help as many holidaymakers as possible return home or reach their destination without needing to make a travel insurance claim.

Around 14 flights in total were affected, with several diverted to Larnaca.

A Thomson Airways spokesman said: "We have been in touch with these customers encouraging them to stay at home during the delay if possible, and providing welfare for those already at the airport.

"Thomson Airways apologises for the inconvenience to customers by these events, which unfortunately were out of our control, and appreciates customers' patience and understanding during the delays."
