British holidaymakers are prepared to spend an average of £3,890 to visit foreign lands this year, according to a new survey.

The figure, revealed in a poll from Visa Europe, shows an increase of more than £300 since last year.

The survey of 2,050 adults also revealed that accommodation is set to be the biggest expense, followed by getting to the destination and then home again.

Last year Spain, with £1.8 billion spent, was the most popular destination for Britons to enjoy their downtime. This was followed by France with £1.5 billion and the USA with £1 billion.

Visa Europe said UK tourists spent £12.4 billion on foreign holidays in 2011, a 2% rise on the figure for the previous year.
