High winds and thunderstorms have led to the cancellation of nearly 80 flights in and out of Heathrow.

According to BAA, some 50 departures and 29 arrivals were cancelled on Thursday due to bad weather, with the first cancellation being made at around 6.30pm.

The airport operator said a number of airlines were affected by it. Such instances highlight the importance of having an adequate travel insurance policy in place.

A BAA spokesman said: "There were cancellations due to the high winds and isolated thunderstorms.

"We were advising passengers who hadn't yet arrived at the airport to check the status of their flights."

He added that although there were "some delays" to flights, the timetable had returned to normal by about 9.30pm. Friday's schedule was expected to be "running fine".
