Hundreds of people have been evacuated from a residential area in the popular holiday destination of Ibiza following a forest fire.

Fire crews are fighting to tackle the blaze, which has been raging in the Santa Eulalia area on the east of the Spanish island since Sunday.

Up to 1,200 people were moved out to safety from their homes and holiday villas by the local authorities, who said there were no reports of any injuries.

Santa Eulalia - Ibiza's third largest resort - attracts large numbers of holidaymakers and the incident highlights the importance of travel insurance for tourists who may face unforeseen problems.

The Balearic Islands regional government said there were around 150 firefighters at the scene and they had managed to slow the spread of the fire, although it is still unknown what caused it.

Water-dumping planes and helicopters were employed to help tackle the blaze.
