An 'undefinable' smell has forced a Madrid-bound flight to land

A Lufthansa flight that carried 85 passengers was forced to land in Zurich on Friday due to a strange smell coming from the kitchen of the plane.

The Airbus 320 flying from Frankfurt to Madrid was diverted to the Swiss city as three out of six crew members had trouble breathing.

According to the airport spokesperson Jasmin Bodmer, although there was no risk to the passengers or the crew members, the decision for the stopover was "purely a precautionary" measure.

All passengers were rebooked on to other planes to Madrid.

Unforeseeable instances like these highlight the need for an appropriate level of travel insurance, including adequate cover for any delays.

Nobody was injured, but the crew members, who complained of having respiratory irritations, were taken to hospital for observation.
