Virgin Atlantic is opening a new route between London Gatwick and Cancun next year, making the popular holiday spot on Mexico's Caribbean coast more accessible to British holidaymakers.

The twice-weekly service to Cancun will be launched on June 12, 2012, and is expected to be popular with customers, with about 94,000 people predicted to travel on the route in one year.

Holidaymakers would be well advised take out a good travel insurance before heading to the tourist destination, which famous for its beaches and hotels.

Sir Richard Branson, president of Virgin Atlantic, said: "Cancun is one of the top five long-haul leisure destinations for UK travellers, so we are delighted to be able to add this route to [our] network.

"This route launch further cements our position as the UK's leading long-haul leisure airline.

"Virgin Atlantic operates flights to a number of summer holiday hotspots in the Caribbean and the US from London Gatwick, including Barbados, Las Vegas, Jamaica and Orlando."
