Smoke free New York City

The Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, is in the process of pushing through a bill to ban smoking in some of the City’s most popular tourist areas.

The bill sets out a smoking ban for Times Square, Central Park and on the beach at Coney Island, meaning anyone caught lighting up will be breaking the law and could be fined up to 250 dollars.

Michael Bloomberg is a committed anti smoking campaigner and faced tough opposition when he first raised the issue of enforcing smoking bans.  But In 2003 he pushed through the first smoking ban, making it illegal to smoke in the City’s bars and restaurants.
