'Few happier places to holiday' than Sri Lanka

The island of Sri Lanka is a "wondrous destination" for a family holiday, according to one respected travel writer.

Families wanting a holiday experience slightly off the beaten path would be advised to consider the country, which is famous for its beautiful beaches and year-round tropical climate.

Being only a short distance from the Indian sub-continent, Sri Lanka is also something of backpacker's paradise, with many travellers opting to spend a few days immersing themselves in the island's rich culture.

Will Buckley, writing for the Observer, said: "It is a wondrous, abundant island inhabited by gloriously friendly people and there can be few happier places in the world to enjoy a family holiday."

Mr Buckley also notes that Sri Lanka has recovered astoundingly well from the tsunami which ravaged its coastal areas in 2004

A commentator in the Guardian newspaper recently wrote that holidaying on a tight budget can actually lead to a more authentic experience. ADNFCR-1320-ID-18819757-ADNFCR
